When it comes to a passion for art, Eduardo Lansberg was a late developer. He explains: “I was born and raised in Venezuela and my school was known for science, but didn’t prioritize art or music, so I missed out on art in my younger years.

“It was only around 16 years ago when I started painting and drawing with my children, Alexia and Andreas, that I realized how much I enjoyed it. That inspired me to start doing my own paintings and drawings, starting with sketches and developing into oil and acrylics on canvas.

“I’ve also branched into multi-media work, mixing acrylics with embedded onyx and quartz on one of my favourite projects so far (pictured above, top left).”

Eduardo joined the Firm as Director of Global Recruiting and Employer Branding in New York this May.

He is responsible for graduate and lateral recruiting across the Firm, excluding partner recruiting. Eduardo completed a law degree in the UK and considered becoming a lawyer before following his passion for recruiting.

He says: “When the opportunity arose, it presented a unique opportunity to join not only a great firm, but also to combine law and recruiting. I’m really excited about my new role.”

Eduardo joined from IHS Markit, a Nasdaq-listed information services company, where he was global head of recruiting and head of HR for Financial Services.

While he’s never had any formal art training, Eduardo enjoys the freedom of expression it gives him.

He says: “The great thing about art is that you have total freedom to create whatever you want.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and, while you can always discuss techniques and styles, the merits of each work of art are often subjective.

“I’ve been inspired by artists such as Alex Katz and Fernando Botero and enjoy visiting galleries, but I take most of my inspiration from everyday things I see in the street.”

Eduardo is also inspired by family. He says: “My stepfather Richard is a successful businessman and accomplished artist and I’m surrounded by creative people including my mother, who should have been an interior designer. Her attention to detail and quest for perfection in everything she does inspired me from an early age.

“I was always encouraged to be inquisitive and we regularly visited galleries and theatres, which goes some way to explaining why I enjoy painting so much.”

Eduardo views painting as a hobby, with many of his works filling the walls of his family home in Westchester County, New York.

“I’m not really interested in selling or exhibiting my art,” he says, “but I do hang my favorite pieces at home alongside art we’ve bought from galleries, estate sales and on our travels.

“My friends sometimes can’t tell the difference between the ones I’ve bought and those I did myself, so that must be a good sign.”

Eduardo’s style is varied, but he particularly enjoys modern pieces with vibrant color and impact.

He says: “Of my work so far, the one that makes me most proud is the onyx and quartz collage. It’s such a big, striking piece, and I love the fact that my wife, Anna, and Alexia and Andreas, glued in some of the pieces.

“I’m also very proud of the portrait of Madonna I copied from an old album cover. It’s hard to get a good likeness of someone and I think I did that very well.”

It can take Eduardo months to complete an artwork in his spare time, but he was particularly active during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He says: “The amount of art I do varies depending on how busy my life is or whether I feel inspired or not, but it’s a great way to unwind and lose yourself.

“It was particularly therapeutic during the pandemic because you can totally escape from everyday life and any pressure.

“I’d recommend art as a hobby to anyone. I’ve heard a lot of people say that they can’t draw, but art really is open to anyone. I’d say, give it a go and express yourself.”
